Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary
Spread over 12 sq. km of forest area around Narnala Fort, Narnala Wildlife
Sanctuary is one of the popular and densely populated wildlife of
Maharashtra. The Narnala Wildlife Sanctuary is declared on 2nd May 1997 and
comprises of tropical dry deciduous forests.
It is a continuation of Gawilgarh range of Satpura Hills and provides an
important extension of Melghat. It serves as a corridor between the Melghat
Tiger Reserve and the Wan Sanctuary. It serves as natural habitat to birds
and wild animals like Sambar, Leopards and Barking Deer. The area is well
known for its richness of flora and fauna. The Sanctuary area has special
historical, biological, mythological, archaeological, scenic and
recreational values and is a point of attraction for the tourists and the
people of Maharashtra.
The rich and varied miscellaneous forests of the area provide natural
habitat to birds and wild animals.
The sanctuary should be ideally visited between the months of August to
February.
Getting There
The village of Shanhanur is the main gateway to the sanctuary. A tar road
connects Shahanur to Popatkhed on the Akot-Harisal State highway. There is a
road from Akot via Popatkhed for vehicles. Akot is well connected by road
with Akola. Akola is well connected by road, railways and air to the rest of
the country.
The Akola Junction Railway Station, situated 40 km away on the Mumbai-Nagpur
rail route, is the closest railhead. Akola is well-connected by an extensive
network of roads to all the major towns of Maharashtra.
Akola Railway Junction lies on both the Mumbai-Bhusawal-Howrah rail line and
the Kacheguda-Jaipur rail line. Buses as well as cab facilities are
available from the railway station for further travel.
Akola has its own domestic airport known as the
Akola Airport. The airport
is situated at a distance of about 7 km outside the main city on National
Highway No. 6. Currently there are no scheduled airlines operating at
Akola Airport.
Nagpur Airport is the nearest international airport which is located at a
distance of about 250 km from Akola.
