Raj Rajeshwar Temple
Akola's oldest Shiva Temple is Raj Rajeshwar Temple, the city derives its
nickname as Rajeshwar Nagari from it. The Shiva Temple was built by Chola
Empire King Raj Rajeswar. A pilgrimage to Raj Rajeshwar Temple in Akola is
done by worshippers of Lord Shiva and has a great historical heritage.
During the Marathi calendar month of 'Shravan', there is a large amount of
devotees to Lord Shiva, especially on every Monday of the month.
The month of Shravan is very sacred according to Hindus, and worshippers
travel from long distances to Raj Rajeshwar Temple to worship Lord Shiva.
This temple is the base aastha of this Akola city.
There are 2 bridges: the first one is the dagadi pool (stone bridge) (also
known as 'chota pool' meaning smaller bridge) and the other is lokhand pool
(iron bridge) (also known as 'motha pool' meaning bigger bridge). This iron
bridge was built at the time of British rule.
The Raj Rajeshwar Temple is located inside the Akola Fort.
Getting There
Akola is well connected by road, railways and air to the rest of the
country.
The Akola Junction Railway Station, situated 40 km away on the Mumbai-Nagpur
rail route, is the closest railhead. Akola is well-connected by an extensive
network of roads to all the major towns of Maharashtra.
Akola Railway Junction lies on both the Mumbai-Bhusawal-Howrah rail line and
the Kacheguda-Jaipur rail line. Buses as well as cab facilities are
available from the railway station for further travel.
Akola has its own domestic airport known as the
Akola Airport. The airport
is situated at a distance of about 7 km outside the main city on National
Highway No. 6. Currently there are no scheduled airlines operating at
Akola Airport.
Nagpur Airport is the nearest international airport which is located at a
distance of about 250 km from Akola.
