Gandhi Museum
Gandhi Museum or the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalay is one of the most prominent
research centers in India. This museum in Barrackpore is spread over five
galleries, a study centre and a massive library.
It is known to be one of the foremost museums in the country, which houses
information on Mahatma Gandhi. The information on display, or available
otherwise for issue or sale ranges from rare collections of Gandhi, rare
books or articles which belonged to him or were written by the father of our
nation himself.
The gallery boats of a collection of more than 800 rare photographs of the
freedom fighter.
Getting There
Take the BT Road, and inbetween Titagarh and Barrakpore, you’ll get the bus
stop – Talpukur bus stop. From here take the Local road or ask anyone about
Rashmoni ghat, you’ll be shown the road to be taken. The temple is hardly
few meters from Talpukur bus stop.
The Barrackpore subdivision is well connected by road, ferry and railways.
With the two National Highways, NH-34 and NH-35, and several major State
Highways passing through the area, most towns are well connected with
Kolkata, its airport and port, and other important urban and commercial
centres of the state.
Barrackpore has been serviced by rail since 1862. It takes about 35-40
minutes by suburban train to reach Barrackpore from Sealdah. As they are
located in a suburban region of Kolkata, most municipalities of Barrackpore
are connected by local train with Kolkata. There are a number of moderately
priced hotels in the town.
The
Barrackpore Air Force Station also serves as an Indian Air Force base in
Barrackpore. Netaji Subhash
Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is the nearest airport to
Barrackpore, it is located at 20 km south east of Barrackpore. To make
arrangements for a taxi or bus from Airport to Barrackpore, contact one the
taxi operators and travel agents that have counter in the Airport.
