The Sericulture Centre
The Sericulture Centre of Dehradun offers wonderful insight into silkworm
farming and mulberry cultivation.
The center is dedicated to offer training in the field of sericulture using
the latest techniques. Sericulture, or silk farming, is the rearing of
silkworms for the production of silk.
Although there are several commercial species of silkworms, Bombyx mori is
the most widely used and intensively studied silkworm. Silk was first
produced in China as early as the Neolithic period.
Sericulture has become an important cottage industries in countries such as
Brazil, China, France, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, and Russia. Today, China
and India are the two main producers, with more than 60% of the world's
annual production.
According to Confucian texts, the discovery of silk production dates to
about 2700 BC, although archaeological records point to silk cultivation as
early as the Yangshao period (5000 – 3000 BC). By about the first half of
the 1st century AD it had reached ancient Khotan, and by AD 140 the practice
had been established in India.
Located 8 kms away in Premnagar, the Sericulture Centre of Dehradun is worth
visit as it also one of the highlights of the town.
