Garh Palace

Garh Palace (also referred to as Garh) in Kota is a large complex with a number of structures. These chiefly depict architectural elegance of Rajput style. The palace complex is also called as 'City Palace' and comprises monuments, suites and apartments built by different rulers of Rajput Dynasty. Displaying richness of heritage, the Garh Palace in Kota is an important place to visit.

According to tradition, the foundations of the City Palace were first laid in 1264 C.E. by Prince Jait Singh of Bundi on the spot where he sacrificed and buried the severed head of the defeated Bhil Chieftain Koteya who had previously ruled the region. The name ‘Kotah' is often said to memorialize the human sacrifice (nar bali) of Koteya, although it may equally reference the presence of a strong fort, or kot.

The palace is decorated with impressive wall paintings, mirror walls, mirror ceilings, hanging lights and flowery decorations. Spectacular marble floorings and walls, an elegantly fashioned entrance, all these make the City Palace an excellent Kota sightseeing location.

The striking garden around the palace adds to the exquisiteness of the Palace. The City Palace houses a grand museum, with a vast collection of medieval weaponary, outfits and apparels of former kings and queens, artifacts and handicrafts displaying the heritage of a splendid past.
