St. John
Church was established by Chaplin Reverend Henry Fisher in 1819, in the
Army cantonment area. Construction work was completed in the year 1822
and it was constructed for the British East India Company.
Considered
to be the oldest church located in the northern part of the country, it
was dedicated to the native people by Bishop Wilson.
The church
has been a witness to the revolt of 1857 when Indians locked horns for
the first time with the British and started the freedom struggle for an
independent India.
