Nizam Sagar

Nizam Sagar Dam is a reservoir constructed across the Manjira River, a tributary of the Godavari River, between Achampet and Banjapalle villages of the Nizamabad district in Telangana. It is located at about 144 km north-west of Hyderabad. Nizam Sagar is the oldest dam in the state of Telangana.

This masonry dam sprawling across the river for 3 km with a fourteen feet wide motorable road over it. There are excellent boarding and lodging facilities nearby, for tourists.

Before Nizam Sagar was built, the Manjira River was not properly harnessed and little water was being used by diverting water at Ghanpur Anicut for Irrigating about 5,000 acres.

 

Nizam Sagar Project is the second irrigation scheme on Manjira River and the largest in the then Hyderabad state taken up during the year 1923 and completed by the year 1931. This Project was originally contemplated for utilization of 58.00 TMC of water to irrigate 2,75,000 acres in Banswada, Bodhan, Nizamabad and Armoor Taluks of Nizamabad District. After reorganization of States in 1956, the Manjira basin got distributed among the three states viz., Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.

The dam is considered one of the biggest dams in the world. The beautiful garden here spellbinds you. You could indulge in swimming and boating here. Since boarding and lodging facilities are available here, you could spend a relaxed day in this serene atmosphere.
 

Getting There

Nizam Sagar is located at Tilak Garden which in turn is located very near the town’s bus stand and railway station.

Nizamabad is well connected by good roads to all the major cities of India.  The major highways that pass through the city are National Highway 44 (NH 44) and National Highway 63 (NH63). Bus service is one of the important modes of transportation in Nizamabad. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) runs around 700 buses through the city on a daily basis, with a bus for every 15 minutes to Hyderabad.

The Nizamabad Junction Railway Station is located on the Secunderabad-Manmad section of Hyderabad Division of the South Central Railway Zone (SCR) and is one of the major stations on Secunderabad-Manmad railway line.

The nearest Domestic / International Airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport of Hyderabad, located at a distance of 202 kilometers from Nizamabad Bus Station. Bus and taxi to Nizamabad are available in the Airport.

In Nizamabad, taxis, buses and autos are available easily. There are a number of moderately priced hotels in the town.
