Promenade Beach

Promenade Beach is the pride of Pondicherry and stretches for approximately 1.5 km. It is a wonderland for travellers and has some of the most magnificent landmarks like the War Memorial, statue of Joan of Arc and the heritage town hall situated on it.

Additionally, one can also spot the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, old lighthouse, the remains of the old pier, Dupleix statue and the old customs house located on the Promenade Beach.

The Beach remains crowded with visitors enjoying sports activities like volleyball and swimming during the evening. Waterscape, ocean spray and myriad reaction of people make the beach an attractive destination of Pondicherry.

 

Crustaceans or animals with exoskeleton like crabs can be found below the rocks situated on the Promenade beach. Some of the best restaurants of Pondicherry majorly dealing with traditional cuisine and seafood can be found here.

Hawkers selling out local street food and handicrafts are a common sight near the beach. Just opposite to the beach, the Tourist Information Centre is present within an esthetically heritage building for any kind of help needed.
 

Getting There

Located next to Gandhi Road, in a busy, vibrant part of the city and if you want to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the shore line, this beach won't let you down.

Pondicherry is connected to Chennai via the East Coast Road through Mahabalipuram. The Pondicherry Road Transport Corporation runs buses within the city. The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation operates Volvo air-conditioned services from Chennai to Pondicherry. There are daily bus services from several main stops from Chennai.

In Pondicherry, taxis, buses and autos are available easily. There are a number of moderately priced hotels in the town.

Pondicherry hosts its own railway station that connects the city with all other major cities like Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Kanpur. So, one planning to reach Pondicherry by train has got wider options.

Pondicherry has its own airport named Pondicherry Airport, located at Lawspet, 7.5 km away from town center. Currently there is no commercial scheduled flights services at this Airport.

The nearest domestic / international airport is Chennai International Airport, located at Chennai, 148 km north of Pondicherry. It is about three hours drive to Chennai International Airport from Pondicherry. To make arrangements for a taxi from Airport to Pondicherry, contact one the taxi operators and travel agents that have counter in the Airport.
