Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary

Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary (DEWS) is located in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. It is approximately 50 km (31.06 miles) away from East Siang.

History of the DEWS dates back to the year 1976. The erstwhile Lali Reserved Forest located in the East Siang district was declared as Lali Wildlife Sanctuary in the year 1976. Later the Lali Wildlife Sanctuary was renamed as Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary by Government of Arunachal Pradesh in the year 1986 with an aim to protect the wildlife present in the Arunachal Pradesh.

Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary is geographically situated in the Lali Reserved Forest spread in East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh.

 

It is on the south east of East Siang. The sanctuary spans an area of 190 sq km (73.35 sq miles) in East Siang district. It is covered by tropical evergreen forests, semi-evergreen forests and sub-tropical forests and savannah type of grasslands. Ttributaries of rivers Siang and Sibiya are flowing through the sanctuary.

Daying Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary is a home for different species of plants, trees, birds and wild animals. Floristic combination of the sanctuary in clued different species of plants and trees etc. Wild Animals found in the sanctuary include both the species of herbivorous and carnivorous animals such as Cheetal, hog deer, sambhar, Nilgai, wild boar, water buffalos, leopard, panther, langur and elephants. Other important wild animals found in the sanctuary are leopard, civet cat, leopard cat, sambar, barking deer, hog deer, rhesus macaque, wild boar, porcupine, stripped squirrel, pangolin and jackal etc.

The DEWS is a home to the species of resident birds and a haven to different species of migrating birds such as waterfowl etc. Ornithologists recorded occurrence of different species of endangered aquatic birds such as bear s pochard, Indian skimmer, spot-billed pelican, lesser adjutant, lesser whistling teal, black-bellied tern, vulture and the darter etc. Reptiles found in the sanctuary include about 100 species of Pisces turtle, water monitor lizards and pythons. Marine biologists spotted occurrence of Gangetic dolphins also in the Siang River flowing through the sanctuary.

The DEWS is open throughout the year. But the best time to visit the sanctuary is during the period of December to February. Visitors can have spectacular view of different wild animals and birds in the sanctuary. Visitors are advised to get in touch with officials of the sanctuary for complete information on entry timings and fee etc.

Visitors can avail the accommodation facilities provided in the Circuit House at Pasighat near the sanctuary. Visitors are advised to get in touch with the authorities of the sanctuary about accommodation, tariff and other facilities.
 

Getting There

Tezu is linked with the adjacent state Assam by road. Nearest bus station is at Tinsukia located at Tinsukia Township. From this point Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services (APSTS) buses ply connecting Tinsukia and Tezu. Tezu is not connected with railway as of now. The nearest railway station is at Murkongselek which is linked to Delhi and Kolkata.

Tezu Airport has had no scheduled services operating. Dibrugarh Airport, also known as Mohanbari Airport, located at Mohanbari is the nearest airport to Tezu. From there taxi or bus is always available.
