Gorakhpur is a city located along
the banks of Rapti river in the eastern part of the Indian state of Uttar
Pradesh. It is located near the Nepal border, 273 kilometres east of the
state capital Lucknow. It is the administrative headquarter of Gorakhpur
District and Gorakhpur Division. The city is home to the Gorakshanath Temple
(Gorakhnath Math).
Gorakhpur is one of the most visited tourist places in the state of Uttar
Pradesh. It is named after the medieval saint Guru Gorakhnath. The city
attracts a number of visitors every year and is popular throughout the
country for its rich culture and traditions.
Gorakhpur is known as an ideal tourist spot where one can find out a number
of shrines and monasteries of different religions. This beautiful city has
numerous historic and religious sites including Imambara (18th century
dargah), Gorakhnath Temple, Gita Vatika, Aroyga Mandir, Chauri Chaura
Shaheed Smarak and many others.
The city is also home to many historic Buddhist sites and places like
Kushinagar, Lumbini and Kapilvastu are not much far from this place.
Gorakhpur is well connected by
road. Faizabad is located at a distance of 140 km from it. Kushinagar is
located at a distance of 60 km while Nepal Sonauli border is located at a
distance of 90 km from it. Bus services are available on these routes as
well.
The Gorakhpur railway station is
the main railhead and serves as the headquarters of North Eastern Railway.
This railhead is well linked to major cities of the country such as Delhi,
Hyderabad, Chennai, Nagpur, Varanasi, Lucknow and a lot more. The tourist
can easily find a large number of auto rickshaws and taxis from outside the
railway station.
