It is so named owing to the abundance of trees categorised as a
forest near the lake, the name signifying Lake Forest. As a popular
tourist destination, Yercaud is also called as Jewel of the South. The
temperature never rises above 29 °C (84 °F) or goes below 13 °C (55 °F).
Coffee and citrus fruits, most notably oranges, are grown in
abundance apart from bananas, pears and jackfruit. Scenically, Yercaud
is as enchanting and picturesque as the hill stations on the Western
ghats and trekking here can be one of the most pleasurable ways to pass
time. The total extent of Yercaud Taluk is 382.67 km2, including Reserve
Forest.
Getting There
Yercaud is connected to city of Salem, Tamil Nadu through Highway of
29 km.
Salem is well connected by good
roads. There are a number of buses running from other major cities and
towns to Salem. Salem Junction (Station code: SA) is well connected by a
good railway network. In fact, it is a divisional headquarters in
Southern Railway. It's connected to Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore and
other major cities and towns of Tamil Nadu and India.
Salem Airport is
situated on Salem-Bangalore Highway at a place known as Kaamalapuram near
Omalur. It is about 20 km away from the city. Currently there are no
scheduled airlines operating at
Salem Airport due to poor patronage.
The nearest international airport is
Coimbatore International
Airport, located in Coimbatore, 160 kms away. It is a three and half hour
drive to Coimbatore from Salem.
